HouArts Public Testimony 101 Presentation Slides
Houston’s arts community came together to demystify public testimony and build confidence in civic advocacy. Led by Michelle Bonton (Public Funding Lead) and Claudia de Vasco (Effective Storytelling Lead), the workshop walked participants through what public testimony is. A structured opportunity to speak directly to decision-makers and put lived experience on the official record and what it isn’t: a debate, a confrontation, or something only experts can do.
Attendees explored the three types of testimony: informing and educating, responding to or combatting negative perceptions, and highlighting the work being done while giving thanks to officials. The group also discussed where these opportunities happen — city council meetings, boards and commissions — and the practical realities of showing up, like speaking within a 1–3 minute window and notifying officials in advance.
A big focus of the session was crafting an effective message. Participants learned to frontload their point, pair data with personal story, introduce themselves with context that connects to the issue, and close with a clear ask. Tone, preparation, and knowing who’s in the room were all part of the conversation.
